A PRACTICAL FIELD GUIDE

What is HackerTube?
Start with the links.

HackerTube is an independent project prompted by Andrej Karpathy. It collects YouTube videos found in Hacker News comments and makes them easier to explore. HackerTube.live is our separate interface to its open dataset.

Find something you want to spend time with

Use the archive search for a subject, creator or title. A query such as “linear algebra” searches titles, topics, tags and descriptions. This site uses word matching; it does not provide the original project’s semantic search or personalized feed.

Topic areas work well when you do not have a title in mind. Choose a format to narrow the list to courses, interviews, talks or demonstrations. The default order uses the original source’s recommendation score, which rewards recommendations spread across different months.

Save a video with the plus button. Your watch-later list stays in this browser. You can remove individual entries or clear the list, and you do not need an account.

Try a title, then widen the thread.Search for “Bézier” to start with a named idea. Open its source card to see how the topic is classified, then follow related topics when you want a broader list. Check what a recommendation actually means

The source pipeline first looked for videos linked by at least three people in at least three different months. AI then classified the comments. A link could be a recommendation, a reference, a joke or criticism.

Those stages produce an important distinction: an included video may have no positive recommendations. Our initial view requires at least one positive recommender and hides videos labeled as event news. The search filters let you include them.

The number beside a card describes the exported sample. The source retains at most twenty mentions per video, and its labels can be wrong. It is not a complete vote count or an independent rating of the film’s accuracy.

Video pages link to the available original HN comment or to an HN search for that video. Read the discussion when its context matters, especially for old software, historical claims or disputed advice.

Watch the video and keep an exit route

Select “Load YouTube player” on a film page. The player uses YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain and loads after your click. Playback still depends on the creator’s embed settings, your region and the video’s availability.

If the player reports an error, use “Watch on YouTube.” A removed, private, age-restricted or embedding-disabled video may not play here. Browser extensions and network restrictions can also prevent the player from loading. The text and source links remain usable.

Captions, playback speed and fullscreen are controlled by the YouTube player when available. This site does not download or rehost the videos.

Questions before you go exploring

Is this the original HackerTube website?

The original project is hackertube.org. HackerTube.live is an independent directory using the openly licensed dataset. We do not speak for Karpathy or the original project.

Are all 6,454 videos recommendations?

No. The source includes videos that were cited or criticized, too. We show 4,654 videos with at least one positive recommender and without the event-news label by default. You can broaden that view in the filters.

Who wrote the descriptions?

The dataset’s video summaries, recommendation explanations and topic labels were generated by AI in the original project. We label them as source descriptions and do not present them as our own viewing experience.

Do I need an account?

No. Saved video IDs are stored locally in your browser. They do not sync across devices. Clearing the site’s browser storage removes them.

How current is the collection?

The imported source export is dated 2026-10-31. Our daily collection check publishes genuine source changes when validation passes. Checking the same export again does not make its videos or descriptions newer.

Is this the same as the HackerTube Apple app?

The name is also used by an independently developed app for Chaos Computer Club talks. This directory covers the Hacker News video dataset. Check the developer and source before installing a similarly named app.
